Grand Finale Osborne

Shhhh. He’s sleeping.

So, just two weeks and six days until Grand Finale Osborne begins his reign of planet Earth. That noise you may have heard a second ago? It was the sound of the brick I just passed hitting the ground. Because I gotta admit, I’m freaking out a bit. And the plethora of Dr. Brown’s bottles which have suddenly appeared out of nowhere?

Not helping. But one thing that does help is looking at these pictures of him.

Because there’s more to Grand Finale than just a gaggle of bottles. He’s not best represented by all the worldly things that give me anxiety, like the pack and play we’ll soon set up to serve as his changing table. Or the receiving blankets and burp cloths that will be neatly folded therein.

He’s best represented, at least for now, by these five pictures, the ones taken of him between worlds, the ones he unknowingly posed for in the warm, safe confines of his mama’s womb.

And it’s these images, the ones which represent him best, that quell my anxiety. They remind me that Grand Finale is more than just some impossible workload. More than a shrill cry in the middle of the night. More than a 4 am diaper change.

He’s my son. My last baby. And, like me, the fifth and unexpected child of a blended family. Like me, born to two 41-year-old parents.

He’s my full circle and when I look at pictures of him, I see not only what I used to be, but also all I’ll ever be. All I’ve ever hoped to be. Dreams meet reality and together they give shape to the life to which they belong. And mine’s pretty damn good, thank you very much.

But it’ll be better yet when my little man gets here. Crazier. More hectic. And probably more difficult, too.

But better. So hurry up, son. We’re waiting for you.

About john cave osborne

John Cave Osborne is a writer whose work has appeared on such sites as DisneyBaby, Babble, YahooShine, TLC and the Huffington Post. He was also referenced by Jezebel one time, but he’s pretty sure they were making fun of him. He and his wife, Caroline, live with their five children and spastic dog in Knoxville, TN. Nothing annoys him more than joke-heavy bios written in the third person, with the possible exception of Corey Feldman.

I have to say, 3D ultrasound pics usually give me the heebie jeebies, but that is a good looking doodlebug. Congratulations!
