My Brush With Greatness

Last night was quite a treat for me. At the kickoff reception for the M3Summit, I got to hear Cal Ripken, Jr. speak up close and personal.

And if this picture taken by Lovie is any indicator, I must have developed a bit of a man crush on the former big-leaguer.

Wow! Then what happened, Cal? *bats eyelashes*

Simply smitten, no? So much so, I got all flustered and forgot to “pose” with Cal. So I did what anyone would do. I waited patiently for the next person to finish with the Hall of Famer, then briefly explained what happened and asked if he’d mind if I posed with him for a quick shot. One of his handlers, however, seemed to think my request was a little aggressive. Or maybe he thought it was a bit frenetic. Because he said “Whoa, fella. Relax. You must drink a lot of coffee.”

Not even sure what that meant, but, hey, at least I got the pic.

cal's tall. i'm short.

After my the pic with Cal, Lovie and I thanked the coffee-comment guy for letting us cut back in. He must have liked Lovie more than me. “Do you know how beautiful your wife is?” he asked.

“Why do you think I drink so much coffee?” I countered. “Gotta stay alert.”

Cal was extremely personable and his people were fantastic, too. Coffee guy included. All of our back and forths were very tongue and cheek. Good clean fun. Lovie and I had a wonderful time and are both really looking forward to the rest of the conference.

John Cave Osborne is a writer whose work has appeared on such sites as DisneyBaby, Babble, YahooShine, TLC and the Huffington Post. He was also referenced by Jezebel one time, but he’s pretty sure they were making fun of him. He and his wife, Caroline, live with their five children and spastic dog in Knoxville, TN. Nothing annoys him more than joke-heavy bios written in the third person, with the possible exception of Corey Feldman.

I did not know Ripken was so incredibly tall – 6’4″. Had to Google it. I have always admired him for his work ethic, and he seems like such a nice guy.

Hope you have as much fun at the rest of the conference.

Your comeback had me laughing. Cal looks more like Andre the Giant in those pictures. That would have been awesome to meet him even though I was more of an Ozzie Smith fan growing up.

Man, that would have been worth the plane fare right there. I could have told Cal how I was there when he hit a walk off 2 run HR against my M’s back in 2000. I am sure he would have remembered it.

    Fun times.

Before that photo, I would have never thought you were an Albino Oompa Loompa.

Cal is just a super nice guy. We heard him speak once and he was being moved through a crowd by his people. I waved a photo of my then Baby Thing 2 and yelled, “Hey, Cal, we named our son after you!” He did a dead stop, came over and signed the photo to him. We were the only people he did that for.

    John,

You crack me up, I just laughed out loud like three times at this story. (My husband is wondering what I am laughing at)

Growning up in MD, I am all too familar with the niceness of Cal Ripken. He is considered a God in that part of the country. He built a minor league ball park in his hometown of Aberdeen MD. My sister Lisa and her husband live near by and take there boys to the ballpark several times a year. The games are always sold out and sometimes you even get to see Cal himself. :)

Also, his wife is almost as tall as he is. They are quite the towering pair!

    • http://www.johncaveosborne.com john cave osborne

wendy! it was great seeing Cal. he truly made me feel as if he *wanted* to talk to me. we discussed stephen strasburg’s injury (as well as how filthy his heat is). we also talked about how jackasses like rob dibble who have publicly criticized strasburg / and or his motion are just jealous. cal and i are on the same page hoping for a full and speedy recovery for that young phenom.

it’s great when someone you admire turns out to be a good guy. hope you guys are well. i miss you! (especially now that we’re in cyber touch.)
