Note to Self

Dear Self,

Next time you get invited on TV to talk about your book, think twice about bringing your brood. Because you never know when your boys will break free and stroll onto the set. (Thank goodness it was during a commercial.)

What did you think they’d do? Just sit there quietly while watching hosts Russell Bivens and Beth Haynes do their thing? Well, yeah, as a matter of fact, I did. And, at least for part of the time, they did just that.

But even when they were being good boys and girls, they were a mere spontaneous meltdown away from making the wrong kind of news in chairs which were scant feet away from all the action. Lucky Lovie was there to keep everything under control.

Surely they’d be good for my interview. Right?

Um, wrong. The interview, appropriately enough, was littered with kiddie interruptions.

And honestly? I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Wanna watch it? Click this link.

Tales from the Trips is available at Carpe Librum Booksellers, Borders Books, on amazon or direct from the publisher. 30% of all proceeds go to Childhelp, a leading non-proffit organization which benefits victims of child abuse and neglect.

About john cave osborne

John Cave Osborne is a writer whose work has appeared on such sites as DisneyBaby, Babble, YahooShine, TLC and the Huffington Post. He was also referenced by Jezebel one time, but he’s pretty sure they were making fun of him. He and his wife, Caroline, live with their five children and spastic dog in Knoxville, TN. Nothing annoys him more than joke-heavy bios written in the third person, with the possible exception of Corey Feldman.

AWESOME! I think the kids presence made the interview even better!

  • Patrick (yeah, that one)

I agree completely with leslee. They were the perfect accent to the interview. If nothing else, it showed the kind of dad you were. You brought them with you, but did not shamelessly whore them out to the camera a la Jon and Kate. You dealt with the minor interruptions in a standard way, recognizing that they were there, giving them a brief moment of attention, and then returning to the interview. Wonderful. Couldn’t have asked for a better or more real interview. :-)

There’s a lot of feedback one could give about your video interview John, by far though the most obvious is how comfortable you were on the set. Excellent job. There will be many more in your future!

Just getting around to this now but good stuff. I think the kids in the background really added to it but I know it’s hard to keep momentum and flow during an interview when you’re secretly terrified your kid is about to have a meltdown on the morning news.
